Double Parking Space
The purpose of a system is what it does.
Oakland city administrators recently caved and settled for unprotected bike lanes on a major commercial corridor—the type of corridor that in most other cities around the world would have been pedestrianized since the '70s.
Unprotected bike lanes are nothing more than parking spots for impatient drivers.
Many studies have shown that protected bike lanes aren't just a nice-to-have when it comes to creating the kind of low-stress networks that allow more people—including new, fearful, or vulnerable riders—to choose to ride bikes
This app lets people in select cities document this problem and sends your photo of obstructed bike lanse directly to local decision-makers who seem to think that this is not a big deal.
What do you want me to do?
Allow this app to access your location and camera. If you are in one of our supported cities, simply snap a photo of a vehicle double-parked in a bike lane and tap the "Send" button. The photo will then be forwarded to relevant people in government, the media, and the local small business community.
Does using this make me a snitch?
No. This app doesn't send photos of antisocial car drivers to ticketing authorities, but to stakeholders that need to be reminded that unprotected bike lanes end up being used as parking lots.
Police have demonstrated in most cities that they do not care about the public safety of vulnerable road users. When criticized for their racist targeting in traffic enforcement, they responded by giving up on traffic enforcement altogether rather than examine how they were upholding white supremacist power structures.
What exactly is getting sent and to whom?
When you first hit "send", your photo goes to us so we can make sure jokesters and butt-diallers don't send our dear decision makers anything that isn't a car parked in a bike lane.
Once we verify your photo, we forward it on to transportation department managers, city council members, local journalists, and the occasional business owner who oppose protected bike lanes (Bike lanes are good for business).
The attached photo from [City] is a stark reminder that bike lanes that lack physical protection from vehicle traffic fail to provide a safe environment for all riders, especially new and vulnerable cyclists.
Physical separation from vehicles is not a luxury; it is a fundamental requirement for building a safe and accessible transportation network. Without it, our bike lanes cannot fulfill their primary function of encouraging and protecting bicycle use.
We urge you to use your influence to prioritize and advocate for the installation of physically separated bike lanes throughout [City]. By championing this essential infrastructure, you will empower more residents to choose a safe, sustainable mode of transportation.
